Chicago suspect planned attack for weeks - US police
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-620548831.4k
u/KeriEatsSouls Jul 05 '22
People are saying that the two deceased victims with the same last name were a married couple at the parade with their 2 yr old. So they got killed and a little 2 yr old was left to wander in that chaos until someone saved them. Fucking heartbreaking

u/Tiny_Gold_6412 Jul 06 '22
Yes it's horrible.
A local mom picked the boy up from the ground from his deceased father's arms. Luckily the police found the grandparents soon after.
But beyond heartbreaking.

Fucking hell. At least the two year old will be too young to remember such a traumatic event. The poor grandparents though. To have a child and their partner die and have to care for their orphaned two-year old child.

u/IBelieveInNessy Jul 06 '22
Not to be a downer, but they may not remember the details but that kind of trauma will stay with them.
Hopefully they'll get correct support when and if they need it in the future.

u/MyMorningSun Jul 06 '22
I think on top of it, he'll grow up with the knowledge. Grief hangs like a heavy fog over everyone it touches- his grandparents and relatives, his teachers and peers or friends and their families, etc. are all going to suffer the aftershocks of this to varying degrees. Kids pick up on it and it's going to color his childhood, most likely.

There was a video he made that was posted to r/publicfreakout for like a minute before it as removed, just a bunch of random shots of him spliced with MSPAINT drawings of a shooter and people being shot.
Of course he planned this. These things are never spur of the moment.

u/leaveittobever Jul 05 '22 edited Jul 05 '22
Am I missing something? The article's title said he planned it for weeks but the article doesn't talk about it all. Nothing in the article talks about what he did to plan. The only thing it says is that he had women's clothing on when they found him.
EDIT: The article was updated 14 minutes ago and more details were added.

u/MisanthropicZombie Jul 05 '22
Literally all they are going off of is press conferences. All that was said about the planning was what you read in the headline, that he had been planning it for weeks. They have said nothing else about it.
It has been 24 hours, it will take time before they release anything of substance.

u/swodaem Jul 05 '22
Yea, but if anyone is curious, you can find his shitty music videos online, multiple of them show drawings of him shooting up a school, or he has a music video of him reaching into a backpack in a school setting, the video cuts, then he is in "tactical" gear with shotgun shells all over the floor and he is dropping shells out of his hands.
One of his videos even has a moving shot staged in the center of the road, and it is of the exact road/area where the shooting occurred.

Doesn't matter how many signs there are. We had a guy at work praise the Taliban, wanting to meet them.
After he was fired for other things, he'd come in every day and harass the staff, he got a warning. A week later he was arrested for firing off a shotgun in the city a couple houses down from a kids party. They seized the shotgun, an AK, hunting rifles, and knives. Even though it was recommended that no one bail him out, his grandma did.
He then returned to coming into the store twice a day for a few weeks until he said he wanted to throw gernades through the window, and was banned. Even had the cops come in and lay it out. THEN had a warrent issued later that night for threatening to kill his parents.
No ones seen him since, and he skipped trial. Will we be the next headline? They've had plenty of chances at this point to do something.

u/hedgetank Jul 05 '22
So, you're saying that the problem isn't that there are signs, it's that our government is either too lazy or too inept to bother acting on them, despite billions spent in electronic surveillance systems that should be scanning for this kind of crap and, programmatically, can absolutely identify and flag this kind of crap to red-flag the person?
I mean, excuse me for saying so, but why the fuck do we have all of that capability when we don't use it? And don't give me "1st amendment". If the person is putting all of this stuff up on public sites/forums, it's public domain. There is absolutely no breech of 1A in using publicly-published materials against a person.

There's this completely irrational thing bouncing around on all these threads. They're giving this weird argument saying "why didn't social media platforms or fbi stop him months ago, it's stupid they only took down his posts after he killed people".
Firstly, I looked at his posts, and especially the one video that everyone pointed to as his manifesto. It was just some shitty song where he essentially says "do we have free will? I feel like we are destined instead. It's like I'm sleep walking etc". There's cartoons of guns etc. But I could find literally millions of songs and pieces of media that are way worse. Does that mean they should all be arrested like we're in Minority Report? Of course not. It's only obvious in hindsight.
Second, of course all the social media platforms are going to take down his stuff after he killed people. This always happens in these cases. I cannot believe people are using this backwards logic. They're not going to take down the stuff before he kills people, we're not clairvoyant...
237
u/SamJSchoenberg Jul 05 '22
Yeah, there is a lot of Monday Morning Quarterbacking.
It's a lot easier to go back and look at what might have been red flags after the fact. It's hard to actually predict if someone is actually dangerous.
16
u/Mista_Madridista Jul 06 '22

At the end of the day, law enforcement is largely not preventative, the sooner people realize that, the sooner we can actually start addressing these issues in society rather than saying the police should do x y z… they never have and they never will because that’s not their job.
It’s like the police is an impediment to improving society because the general public believes they are the only ones responsible for dealing with the bad shit that happens.

That's pretty close to the short story version. The movie made it all dystopian, short story was like "This is sweet, there are unforseen consequences for whoever runs the program but really we're all better off with precrime." The main villain is the guy trying to stop the pre crime program in the short story.
→ More replies36
u/BorntobeTrill Jul 05 '22
I will admit, I have not read, and did not know there was a short story. My comment is based on the movie, which makes it pretty clear that it *is* a dystopia if you try to handle "Precrime" the way you handle crime which has happened.
→ More replies25
u/Yousoggyyojimbo Jul 05 '22
It took me out of the movie in that the way they handled precrime was the most expensive and dumb way to do it.
An intervention and resolution task force that doesn't arrest anybody would make way more sense.
16
u/gogorath Jul 05 '22
They actually have that. A number of cities are using data and AI to identify likely killers -- a large % of gun violence is committed by a relatively small number of people.
There's intervention, and it seems to work fairly well from everything I've seen. I'm not entirely sure what the intervention is, and I'm sure it could be abused, but it still seems to be somewhat effective.

u/revrigel Jul 05 '22
It wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t lock people up on the charges of a future crime, but just stopped it from occurring and got them some intervention/help. No need for criminal charges.

There was one with MS paint style characters depicting a girl he liked...and then a mass shooting (?). As in, the main character had an assault rifle, then I think a bunch of dead bodies, some police officer characters, and a scene where the MC is lying dead in the ground in a pool of blood in front of police.
Shoot I saved some of the videos before they were taken down but they were on my other computer and having trouble finding them online now. If I find the videos, will link.
But that was the most memorable scene I remember....like he was wishing for a suicide by cop type of thing. Creepy tbh

He was caught later that day after he drove through a tollbooth with an electronic toll pass and the tollbooth captured his license plate. If he wanted to get away he could have easily dumped his license plates at the very least.

Reminds me of the Nashville Christmas bomber. His girlfriend and her attorney both warned police he was manufacturing bombs in his RV in the back yard. Local police did go to the residence once to investigate. They found the bomber did not answer the door after knocking and calling him. They shrugged it off and never followed up.
Good thing that guy wasn’t actually intending on killing people (so it appears). His target was the AT&T switchboard building in Nashville around 6:30 am Christmas morning, when the building was likely empty or near-empty. He blew the face off it though. It was roughly the same impact as Oklahoma City.

Remember that when they say that you can't have encryption, or that you can't use a vpn, or that your communications MUST have backdoors - that they constantly fail at predicting this type of crime, and not allowing those tools in the future will not help.
This may sound a little paranoid. And its because it is.

The 1/6 insurrectionists planned out in the open on Parler, Facebook, and reddit for over a year. The Sandy Hook murderer had a YouTube channel that was years old. The Buffalo shooter was known to law enforcement and his mom bought him the guns he used to kill "to cheer him up".

I really do think they need to stop saying "Chicago". This was not in Chicago. Highland Park is a wealthy suburb 20-25 miles outside of Chicago. "Chicago" will be used as a rightwing racist dog whistle but Highland Park is wealthy ($150K median household income) and almost entirely (82%) white.

I saw a comment yesterday on either rConservative or Joerogan claiming that it was more likely he was there to try and assassinate Trump instead of being a Trump supporter.
Of course, the fact that he totally did not try to assassinate Trump wasn't at all an indicator that this was completely ridiculous motivated reasoning.

Every single time. Shit, when the Uvalde shooting happened they started saying the sheriff was a big Biden donor.
I'd wonder why the Trumpers never ask "why do people on my side have to make things up if we are the good guys?" if I didn't know just how fucking dumb they are.

The cops seized 16 knives from him on September for making threats. Nothing to stop him from buying a firearm though.

Seriously, it boggles my mind there’s so many losers with no future to look forward to except shooting strangers. Like it’s not even a revenge thing. They just have no one in their lives.

It wasn't Chicago, it was an entirely different city 30 miles away.

It’s Chicagoland. But yeah, my parent’s neighbors hear I live in Chicago, they say, “Oh yeah! My kid lives there too!” “Where at?” “<insert Chicago suburb>. Where do you live?” “<insert Chicago neighborhood>” “Oh, I’ve never heard of that.” “It’s 10 minutes from downtown.” <eyes widen>

News outside the region just deals with the greater metropolitan region rather than the city proper. Anything up to two of the state borders and within 50 miles counts as "Chicago" in that case.

In April 2019, police were called to his home one week after he reportedly attempted suicide. "It was a mental health issue," Mr Covelli said on Tuesday, adding that the issue was left in the hands of "mental health professionals".
In September 2019, police were called by a family member of the suspect, who said he was making violent threats to "kill everyone".
Police responded and removed 16 knives, a dagger and a sword from his home. He was not arrested, and no further action was taken.
For FUCKS SAKE! How tf was he allowed to buy a gun after all that? This country is fuckin broken.

The thing is it’s not broke beyond repair. There is very clear and obvious steps to be taken. It sadly will take more tragedy, and it might not happen in my lifetime, but perhaps in my kids lifetime meaningful federal gun laws will be passed. And to reiterate I said MEANINGFUL. Not what we have now.
For every one violent incel we have more sensible people. Eventually the people will be heard. It’s just not going to be soon enough.

Law enforcement believe that Robert Crimo III, 21, legally bought the high-powered rifle he used in the attack.
The gunman had legally purchased five firearms around one year ago, police say.
This clearly shows that the existing gun laws aren't being properly enforced. He should have been flagged in NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) after the incidents in April/September of 2019, but he clearly wasn't. It's a failure to follow the reporting processes already in place and whatever police department responded is to blame and should be called out to answer for their failure.
EDIT: NICS is the database the licensed firearm dealers use to do a background check before you can legally purchase a weapon.

And let me guess, he was known to the fbi just like the past six shooters were. FBI needs to start doing something about these supposed hunches they have.

He was known to law enforcement due to a suicide "attempt" and threatening to kill members of his family.

Mentally unstable in 2019, still able to purchase firearms in 2021.
