"is it my fault I'm shit? No it's definitely the fps drop"

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

Teammate getting absolutely dumpstered in Overwatch.

Teammate in comms: "Oh my god this laagggg"

258

u/fuckprecalc Sep 20 '21

Man the thing is when it actually is lag you just gotta stay quiet cuz no one is gonna believe u

67

u/MakiKatomori Sep 20 '21

If I see lag and die to it I'm just like oh that happened welp let's just respawn.

27

u/Shrave Sep 20 '21

I die a lot when there is lag and when there isn't so it makes no difference for me at this point.

33

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

Dude I used to play cs1.6 on early DSL haha Those were lag days

36

u/hangtime79 Sep 20 '21

Quake II on a 56K modem that never connected above 26.4K. We invented the term HPB. This is my lawn.

29

u/FinishingDutch Sep 20 '21

The very first online game I played was Team Fortress Classic on 56k. I remember being completely blown away that, not only was I playing with actual people, I was playing with people halfway across the world.

It was all very friendly, not toxic at all. Because to everyone, the experience was so very new.

8

u/idsan Sep 20 '21

Not quite that far back, but I used to think there was bullet travel time in Halo CE multiplayer because of how far I had to lead the target to combat what was actually lag. Fun times.

3

u/zb0t1 Sep 20 '21

Well I had to do that on Quake, UT, early BF and Cod because I used to live more than 10k kms away from Europe, and I had like 250ms playing. It teaches you to predict a lot and when you play in Europe with low ping later your skill is insane because you learned how to predict dodges and movements (also behind corners).

But today I won't even play if I have more than 60-70ms online haha.

2

u/Vaskaduzea1702 Sep 20 '21

i believe thats why they added sound on dmg in quake, and later on hitmarkers in cod

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

Yep, i remember playing that too, good timesđź‘Ť

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

Quake 3 arena with the DBZ mod ftw!!

2

u/Sp99nHead Sep 20 '21

I was so happy when i called my ISP to activate fastpath

2

u/Guerillagreasemonkey Sep 20 '21

I played on dialup, I got used to 250ms lag as a best case.

I was an absolute monster on LAN because it felt like I had superpowers.

2

u/Zambito1 Sep 20 '21

I used to play CSGO on DSL :(

22

u/Earthboom Sep 20 '21

Latency is a silent killer. It's one thing if I'm trash but another if I'm fighting the code, and they're trash. That just hurts.

11

u/zxern Sep 20 '21

Lol I remember playing FPS games on dialup with 400+ ping and gaming the netcode by shooting before I came around the corner. It was 50/50 chance the server would think I was already around the corner when I fired.

28

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

A few days ago I was playing TF2 and was playing against other Sniper. I saw him, aimed at a head, shot him, but he didn't die and killed me. I've said that it's lag, he answered with "Yeah sure"

When lag stopped, I've killed him 3 times in a row and he said "I guess it really was a lag"

3

u/SageHunter Sep 20 '21

Call out lagg before you die of it, problem solved!

Honestly, one feature I do like in LoL is that you can ping your ms

3

u/Ermellino Sep 20 '21

You can message your ping in LoL. So you can prove it, unless it's random 1k spikes that quickly go back to normal

2

u/StormKiller1 Sep 20 '21

Only if its not that bad, my internet goes crazy on some weekends and my team can see me teleporting around the map with a crazy ping.

2

u/pawnyourbaby Sep 20 '21

You just have to be creative. Don’t say you’re lagging, instead say something like “anyone else see that Roadhog rubber banding? Just me? Fuckin lag!”

1

u/Aethz3 Sep 20 '21

until you tap tab and see yourself at 200 ping while others are at 18

0

u/Elgatee Sep 20 '21

I rarely die from lag. It's just that lag prevent my enemy's death. That is infuriating. I'm taking risk to take his life. I know I can and will die sometimes. I just hate when random bullshit mean my risk turns from calculated to "FU" without my own input.

10

u/rmorrin Sep 20 '21

I've had times where my frames have dropped from 144+ to sub 50. And I'm just like ?!?!?! It's so jarring when frame stutters and shit happen

8

u/iscorama Sep 20 '21

Yeah, it’s not your terrible reflexes or aim. It’s fucking XFINITY, bro!

2

u/deconnexion1 Sep 20 '21

I have lag between my brain and my hand.

10

u/ZadockTheHunter Sep 20 '21

"My ping just spiked to 60 guys, unplayable!"

14

u/UnartisticChoices Sep 20 '21

I mean, if your used to like 10 ping I guess a jump to 60 would feel like a lot but since I've never experienced it I can't really say anything about it.

2

u/Nogiogo Sep 20 '21

I would rather take this ping than have 80-85 ping.

2

u/SoulOfTheDragon Sep 20 '21

I don't think i've ever had connection that has managed below 40 during gaming. Usually it's around 60ms. But hell was it pain when EA matchmaked me to +250 ms server yesterday...

4

u/ikmyusername Sep 20 '21

Spikes are pretty bad, sometimes my ping spikes to 70 and the game is unplayable for a couple of seconds because I rubberband everywhere.

2

u/Flabbergash Sep 20 '21

She's too tanky

2

u/CWinter85 Sep 20 '21

I remember playing QuakeWorld 2Forts on GameSpy. Getting the Ping under 300 was like playing as Spider-Man. You could react so quickly it was basically cheating.

20

u/Legend_Lynx_Gaming PC Sep 20 '21

well I almost died in hardcore minecraft due to my computer settings making Frames per second better described by seconds per frame

13

u/Pyroperc88 Sep 20 '21

If you like SPF may I interest you in Kerbal Space Program with a extra generous serving of Moar Boosters?

2

u/Scholesie09 Sep 20 '21

Took me 10 seconds to realised you meant "Seconds per Frame" and not Sunscreen Strength SPF

2

u/Legend_Lynx_Gaming PC Sep 20 '21

Haha already have the game it's like half of what I post

1

u/Shas_Erra Sep 20 '21

Came here for the Kerbals. Was not disappointed

28

u/cokezerodesuka Sep 20 '21

"I sucked in that match because this monitor is only 60hz, I need at least 144" - literally something my friend said when he played on my setup

42

u/svlymxn Sep 20 '21

Tbh 60-144hz is a pretty sizable difference. Thought the same as you when I first got my 144hz but after some time you really get used to the smoothness of everything and now I honestly can't have a good time playing fast-paced shooters unless my FPS is as high as my refresh rate

12

u/cokezerodesuka Sep 20 '21

It’s very cool, but tbh not essential

It makes games look cooler but doesn’t make them more fun. I don’t play FPSes much so maybe that’s why I fail to see the value in it.

12

u/zb0t1 Sep 20 '21

Depending on the game it's literally a world of difference. You can't humanely have the same accuracy in Quake with a 60hz compared to 120/144/160/165/180/240/360 hz (160 and 180 for the CRT ppl who remember).

Nobody I know of (even the best players in history) can track targets with an accuracy of 50% with less than 160hz consistently! Some do with 144hz but I only know three guys who could do it. That's more than 99,99% of players who don't have the physical abilities to see and react quick enough. A bit like SĂ©bastien Loeb in WRC with his insane eyesight who supposedly give him an unfair advantage and you understand why he is the best rally driver.

Monitor refresh rates basically make you see closer to how you see the world IRL. Dome people obviously see better than others, but it eliminates the motion blur, improves response time and input lag by a lot. Imagine Ali or Tyson fighting, they are like using 360hz and their opponents 60hz, it's not a very accurate analogy but it's just to give you an idea.

In Quake thanks to 360hz and soon higher we'll probably be able to reach accuracy numbers never seen before and 5 years ago people would call you a cheater. I mean the 3 players who could hit 50% were called cheaters when we only had 144hz monitors. And one became Quake champion a few years ago ;).

3

u/Pearl4356 Sep 20 '21

Haha nice try Big Display, everyone knows that human eye can't see beyond 60fps

-7

u/SukunaShadow Sep 20 '21

You sound like right dog

2

u/svlymxn Sep 20 '21 edited Sep 20 '21

Kinda like how 60hz is the standard now, I'm hoping 120-144hz becomes the standard in the future.

I'm pretty prone to motion sickness and for some reason games like Minecraft or browsing twitter really make me nauseous; but, at risk of sounding like a paid sponsorship, 144hz has actually helped me in this regard. Being able to discern the text while scrolling and having less of a difference between frames as I look around in games (I play with high sensitivity) has helped minimize vertigo. I know this is a pretty specific case but for me, it kinda is essential if I want to do some things!

ATP I pretty much only keep my 75hz monitor to see who's speaking in discord or to watch some videos because of its better picture quality

2

u/crazedizzled Sep 20 '21

I don’t play FPSes much so maybe that’s why I fail to see the value in it.

For sure. Fast paced games are just much much better at 144hz. The game is much smoother with less input lag.

11

u/thiamazole Sep 20 '21

maybe u just suck

15

u/Kepler186fV2 Sep 20 '21

I thought the same until I got a 144hz monitor myself. The difference seems minimal when you first use it, but once you're there it's hard to go back. I can literally feel and see the difference in smoothness now

11

u/Tychus_Kayle Sep 20 '21

Your eyes would adjust within a week on a 60hz display, and you'd stop seeing it.

8

u/Kepler186fV2 Sep 20 '21

Maybe that's true, but why not play on a smoother monitor if you could?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

[deleted]

6

u/Kepler186fV2 Sep 20 '21

Understandable. To each their own!

1

u/cokezerodesuka Sep 20 '21

I’d need to upgrade my hardware just to see games run faster, not sure if my 2060 can do 144hz on the games I want.

Maybe if I can run Elden Ring at 1440p/144hz I’ll upgrade my monitor.

8

u/patpatpat95 Sep 20 '21

They did a test with shroud and a few other players on the difference between playing on 144hz and 60hz. There is actually a big difference. For example, awping mid on dust 2, shroud hits more than double the shots on 144hz than 60hz. So yeah, big difference, not only feeling.

-8

u/thiamazole Sep 20 '21

maybe shroud just sucks

-1

u/Cactus_Humper Sep 20 '21

Maybe you just suck

1

u/Hanifsefu Sep 20 '21

Honestly these threads are so randomly toxic about things that have insanely good feedback from every single person who has used it and insanely negative feedback from people who have never touched it. I swear this is just the new version of their console war crap and they are just making things up to say their 30 fps console is better.

1

u/SuprDog Sep 20 '21

Literally just boomers not "getting" it and saying its the kids who are wrong like that simpsons meme.

Its the phase of adults when they start to dislike changes.

-1

u/Trodamus Sep 20 '21

yeah but that dude was saying his friend attributed his poor match performance to only playing at 60 fps instead of 144.

Which I would say wouldn't have an impact except at the highest level of competition.

And also you are unironically this meme. The game isn't more or less enjoyable at 60 vs 144, you're just picky and it's to your detriment.

3

u/Dood567 Sep 20 '21

I think the change up in fps feeling different makes it feel a lot worse than the actual "playability" of it. Especially if you're in a fast paced game or fps. Once you're used to one "constant" speed to run at, lower frames might just feel off.

2

u/crazedizzled Sep 20 '21

Playing on 60hz when you're used to 144hz is in fact quite jarring.

1

u/AsterixLV Sep 20 '21

It is, for some reason when my hdd starts spining the fps drops to 0, literally freezes the game for half a sec, not fun. Had to move my terraria from the hdd to ssd.

0

u/Noobraiser Sep 20 '21

Still using HDD - yikes.

1

u/Thenotsopro Sep 20 '21

Well it's definitely hard to be good when you drop from 180fps to 75 often.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

I dunno.. I could snipe 1250+ on BF3 with like 36fps

1

u/Thenotsopro Sep 20 '21

sniping... the thing that requires 0 fps to do? true i guess

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '21

When someone runs at 1100mway? Sure thing bud
